Birthmark Removal

Birthmark Removal

Birthmarks are cosmetic concerns we are destined to live with indefinitely unless we seek professional treatment to have them removed. In most cases, these marks are not a medical problem, although large birthmarks can sometimes interfere with a child’s function and development. When the birthmark is problematic, removal may be recommended at a younger age. However, many of Dr Teston’s patients are adults that have decided it is time to say goodbye to the mark that has affected their appearance and their self-confidence.

A plastic surgeon, particularly one with the extensive training and experience offered by Dr Teston, is a superior choice for your birthmark removal. In addition to her ability to effectively eradicate the mark, Dr Teston will do her best to ensure that any incisions used for the procedure leave minimal scarring. This occurs through carefully placing the incision along the natural lines of the skin, as well as suturing techniques that promote healthy healing of the incision after surgery.

Before Birthmark Removal

Surgical removal tends to work best on pigmentation-type birthmarks like moles, Mongolian spots and coffee-cream spots. Some of these marks may disappear as a child grows. However, if the birthmark does not fade, surgery may be the best option for removing the mark and creating a clearer skin appearance. Also, large moles can change over time, increasing the risk of a malignancy. For this reason, patients may also opt to remove them entirely to eliminate that concern.

Dr Teston will evaluate your particular mark to determine whether surgery is your best solution. The benefit of surgical removal is that it is handled in a single treatment session. Other procedures, such as laser treatments, often take multiple sessions before full results are achieved.

During Your Surgery

Most birthmark removal is performed in an accredited medical facility using local anaesthesia. If the mark is particularly extensive or if the surgery proves to be more complex, general anaesthesia may be used instead. During the operation, Dr Teston will make the incisions necessary to excise the mark, while taking care to minimise post-operative scarring. Most birthmark removals take less than one hour to complete, and you will be able to return home shortly after your procedure.

After Birthmark Removal

Most patients can head back to their daily activities immediately following birthmark removal. However, more extensive procedures may require you to rest quietly for a day or two after your treatment to give your body ample opportunity to heal. It is important that you follow your post-op incision care instructions carefully to ensure the best possible healing.

Dr Teston will see you one week after your birthmark removal to remove your sutures and check your progress. Keep in mind that it will take many weeks or even months for the incision to settle entirely and produce your final result. Sun protection is a must during this time to prevent complications in the healing process.

Birthmarks may not be a medical issue in most cases, but they can be a significant cosmetic embarrassment. Dr Teston offers birthmark removal to her patients to enhance their appearance and boost their self-confidence.
