Scars

Scars are often the permanent reminders of past experiences like injuries, illnesses, and surgeries. Unfortunately, prominent scars can be unsightly and impact your self-esteem as well as your satisfaction with your appearance. The good news is that those visible scars can often be made less noticeable through a procedure known as scar revision.

Dr Teston offers a variety of techniques and procedures to make your scar blend in better with surrounding skin and tissue. An experienced plastic surgeon is a good choice for this treatment, since their training centres on creating the best cosmetic result no matter which method of scar removal is used. While no scar can be removed entirely, their appearance can nearly always be enhanced with the right cosmetic procedure.

Before Scar Revision

Treatment for scar revision will depend in part on the type of scar you have:

  • Hypertrophic Scars – These scars are usually raised, red and restricted to the area of the wound. They are either darker or lighter than the surrounding skin and can expand over time.
  • Keloids – Keloid scars extend beyond the parameters of the original wound and can grow quite large. They are frequently located on visible areas like the ears, face, neck and shoulders. These scars have a high recurrence rate, so treatment often involves a combination of approaches to eradicate the scar and prevent them from returning.
  • Contractures – These scars typically form after burn injuries or other injuries that lead to loss of skin and tissue. Contractures develop as a result of remaining tissue pulling together, and tend to pull in instead of stick out. They can extend across a wide expanse of skin, and will restrict motion if they are located around a joint.

Dr Teston will evaluate your scar at your consultation to determine which procedure will produce the best possible results. She will consider many variables, including your skin type and tone, age, and how your body typically heals. Sometimes, more than one procedure may be recommended, either simultaneously or in a series of treatment sessions.

During Your Surgery

Dr Teston will perform scar revision differently, depending on the size and location of the scar and the technique used. Smaller scars can be addressed during a day surgery, in an accredited medical facility, using local anaesthesia. Larger scars may require general anaesthesia and an overnight stay in the hospital to ensure your recovery begins safely and successfully.

Some scars are surgically excised, leaving a much smaller scar in their place. Others may be treated using a skin flap or graft to hide the current scar. An innovative technique known as Z-plasty may also be performed. This procedure repositions the current scar to bring it in line with the natural lines and folds of the skin. A new incision is created in a “Z” pattern to make the new scar less prominent.

After Scar Revision

Depending on the extent of your surgery, you may be able to return to your regular activities the same day as your procedure, or very shortly thereafter. Dr Teston will see you around seven days after your treatment to remove your sutures and check your healing progress. It will take a number of months for your new incision to heal fully, but it should be more cosmetically pleasing than the original scar was.
