Breast Reduction

Breast Reduction

Women with disproportionately large breasts often face more than feeling self-conscious about their bodies. Large, heavy breasts can also lead to uncomfortable physical symptoms like back, shoulder and neck pain, and skin rashes when the skin underneath the breast chafes. Some women also suffer from permanent indentations in their shoulder from over-taxed bra straps.

In addition to the physical discomfort, women may avoid certain activities or types of clothing because of the size of their breasts. This specific concern can significantly impact a woman’s quality of life overall. Breast reduction is a surgical procedure that removes excess tissue and skin from the breasts to create a more balanced upper body profile and alleviate symptoms related to large breasts.

With more than 24 years of experience in breast enhancement procedures, Dr Teston has the skills and knowledge to perform your breast reduction safely and successfully. She may recommend breast reduction alone or in conjunction with an uplift to further improve the shape and positioning of the breasts and restore a more youthful body profile.

Before Breast Reduction

Breast reduction is a good option for women that are embarrassed by the appearance of their breasts or are uncomfortable in general from the breast size and weight. This procedure can be performed on women of all ages, as long as the breasts have finished developing. Some women also choose to wait for breast reduction until after they are finished having children, since the results of the procedure can affect and be affected by pregnancy and nursing. Both the decision to have surgery and the timing of the procedure are very personal decisions that you and your plastic surgeon should make together.

  • Breast Reduction Techniques – While there are a variety of approaches to breast reduction, Dr Teston tends to prefer the short vertical scar technique, because it provides adequate access to the breast tissue while minimising visible scarring. This technique consists of an incision around the areola, and extends down the lower half of the breast. This incision will be met with a short horizontal incision along the breast crease. This technique is slightly less invasive than the traditional “anchor” scar that includes a much longer incision along the breast crease.
  • Addressing the Nipples and Areola – In addition to decreasing breast size, adjustments to the nipples and areolas may be needed to produce a natural and aesthetically pleasing result. Your nipples may point downward instead of outward, which would necessitate moving them higher on the breast to create the appropriate proportion. The areola (the pigmented area around the nipple) may also be enlarged, which will become even more problematic once the breast size is reduced. Dr Teston can address these concerns during your breast reduction procedure to ensure your final result after surgery meets your expectations.

Before your surgery is scheduled, share your specific concerns and possible symptoms with Dr Teston so she can make an accurate assessment of your situation and prescribe the best treatment option for you. The ultimate goal of breast reduction is to create a natural, beautiful body profile that boosts your confidence while allowing you to wear clothing you feel attractive in and participate in activities that were previously restricted due to your breast size.

During Breast Reduction

Dr Teston performs breast reduction under general anaesthesia in an accredited hospital. During the procedure, Dr Teston will remove loose skin and tissue from both breasts to create a more aesthetically pleasing shape. Care will be taken to ensure symmetry and consistency between the two breasts. Incisions will be carefully closed with tiny sutures to minimise visible scarring after the surgery.

Dr Teston usually performs breast reduction surgery in two to three hours. You will probably remain in the hospital for two days after your surgery, as drains are usually placed in the incisions immediately following this procedure to prevent fluid build-up and infection in the surgical site. You will also have bandages over the breasts, which will be replaced by a special surgical bra the day after your procedure. The surgical bra offers more freedom, including the ability to shower daily throughout your recovery process.

After Breast Reduction

You should be able to return to your regular activities within a week or two. Heavy lifting and exercise are restricted for an additional two weeks to ensure full healing of the breasts. Once the swelling subsides, the full results of your procedure will become evident. Those results should be long-lasting, offering both cosmetic improvement and physical relief from symptoms associated with large breasts.

Large breasts can lead to self-consciousness about your appearance, restriction of activities and even physical pain. Breast reduction surgery is an effective, permanent method of correcting overly large breasts, and bringing balance and proportion to your entire body contour.
