Frequently Asked Questions
A facelift is not typically associated with severe pain because anesthesia is used during the surgery, and prescribed pain medication is available for the recovery period. However, patients may experience discomfort, tightness, and pressure, especially in the first few days after surgery, which can be managed with medication and other methods like cold compresses. Pain is subjective, and some individuals may be more sensitive than others.
The recovery time (or time to heal) after face surgery depends on the individual patient’s ability to heal and the type of surgery undertaken. Swelling will be helped by sleeping with the head elevated.
Depending on the type of face surgery, most normal activities can resume after 4-6 weeks. Lighter activities may be possible after 2-3 weeks. Strenuous activities, heavy lifting and vigorous exercise should be avoided for up to 6 weeks or until Dr Teston advises it is safe.
Full recovery and resolution of all tightness and swelling typically takes longer, with some aspects improving for up to one year.
Temporary changes in facial sensation/feeling is likely after facial surgery, such as tingling, tightness and numbness as nerve pathways heal.
Sensation gradually returns over the weeks or months. In rare cases, nerve damage can be permanent, however Dr Teston will discuss these risks during your consultations.
During your consultations, Dr Teston will explain all of the risks and recovery involved in the type of face surgery you are interested in.
