Carpal Tunnel Release

Carpal Tunnel Release

Carpal tunnel syndrome causes pain in the wrist and hand that can impact your ability to function on a daily basis, and affect your overall quality of life. When conservative treatment methods are not effective in treating this disorder, surgical intervention may be necessary. Dr Teston offers carpal tunnel release surgery to the appropriate candidates, providing them with significant, lasting relief from wrist and hand discomfort.

With extensive experience in the plastic surgery field, and the treatment of various conditions of the hand, Dr Teston is very well qualified to perform carpal tunnel release surgery.

What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

The carpal tunnel is a small, bony tunnel in the wrist that allows for passage of the median nerve into the hand. The median nerve is the primary nerve leading to the hand, which provides feeling for the thumb and fingers. Sometimes the carpal tunnel can narrow for any number of reasons, compressing the nerve and causing tingling, pain and weakness in the hand.

Before Carpal Tunnel Surgery

Your physician may advise you to pursue carpal tunnel surgery if the following treatment options have not proven effective:

  • Anti-inflammatory medications
  • Physical therapy
  • Changes to work or home environment to ease strain
  • Splints to support the wrists
  • Corticosteroid injections directly into the carpal tunnel

When you have not found relief from any of these treatments, it may be time to schedule your consultation with Dr Teston to find out whether surgical treatment is the right choice for you.

During Carpal Tunnel Surgery

If you do move forward with surgery, you will undergo your procedure in an accredited surgical facility under general anaesthesia. During the surgery, Dr Teston makes a small incision in the palm at the wrist. Through the incision, she can divide the carpal ligament that is pressing down on the carpal tunnel and causing the narrowing. This allows the median nerve to pass freely through the opening and eliminates the pain due to the compression of the nerve.

Carpal tunnel release usually takes less than one hour to complete. After your procedure, you will be attended by nurses for a few hours to ensure you wake safely from the anaesthesia and are ready to leave the facility. Patients are then released to go home with your hand in a splint and sling to keep your hand elevated. You will not be able to drive a car while you are in a splint.

After Carpal Tunnel Surgery

Although you will be able to return to your regular activities within a few days after carpal tunnel surgery, the treated hand will likely be in a small splint for one week to allow for full healing of the ligament and surgical area. During this time, you will be restricted from heavy lifting or strenuous exercise that would put pressure on the wrist and hand. Recovery from carpal tunnel surgery is gradual, with almost immediate relief of the pain that you experienced at night, it may be one full year before you see the full results of this procedure. Fortunately, the surgery typically brings long-term relief from carpal tunnel syndrome.

If you are struggling with the pain and debilitation of carpal tunnel syndrome and have not seen relief with other treatment measures, contact Dr Teston’s office today on (02) 9708 3511 and find out if surgery is the right option for you.
