Tendon & Nerve Repairs

Injuries to the hands often involve tendons and nerves that require meticulous surgical repair to restore function. Because your hands are such a visible part of your anatomy, cosmetic results are also important when it comes to treating injuries. When you are in need of any type of hand surgery, an experienced plastic surgeon like Dr Teston is the best choice to ensure a positive aesthetic result, as well as full restoration of form and function.

Your hands are vulnerable to many different types of injury, including sprains, lacerations, and crushing. Any of these events can cause significant pain and debilitation. When your hand doesn’t function properly, it is often surprising to discover just how many of your daily tasks are affected. Prompt treatment, which often means surgery, is usually needed to help you regain your routine and your quality of life.

Before Your Surgery

Injuries may affect the tendons, nerves, or a combination of the two:

Tendons and Nerves: What they do

Tendons are fibres that stretch from the bones in the hand to the muscles in the lower arm. They allow for movement of the hand and fingers, so when an injury occurs to a tendon, it can severely affect function. Tendon injuries are frequently the result of lacerations or crush injuries, but they can also occur with dislocations and fractures.

Nerves send messages from the brain to the arm, hand and fingers. Nerves are covered with a sheath to protect them, but the sheath is not always a sufficient shield in the event of an injury. The most common types of injuries that affect the nerves include stretching, cutting, or excessive pressure on the hand or finger. These injuries can cause loss of feeling and impact the way the muscles function.

Assessing the Injury

Dr Teston will meet with you before your surgery to evaluate the extent of your injury and discuss the best treatment option for you. Some of those options might include:

  • Grafting of healthy nerves or tendons to restore feeling and function
  • Replantation of amputated digits, using microsurgery to reconnect nerves
  • Repair of torn tendons by surgically reattaching them or sewing them back together
  • Repair of the nerve sheath so that new nerve fibres can grow

No matter which technique will be used during your surgical repair, Dr Teston will take care to produce the best possible cosmetic result, even while restoring form and function to the wrist, hand or fingers. Her extensive experience in hand surgery ensures you will receive the highest level of care and the best outcome available.

During Your Procedure

There are different ways Dr Teston might perform your hand surgery, depending on the extent of your injury and the complexity of the required surgery. Some procedures may be done as day surgeries, which means you can return home a few hours after treatment. Other patients may require a night or two in the hospital, where they will receive a high level of care from a qualified nursing staff until they are ready to go home.

All of Dr Teston’s hand surgeries are performed in an accredited hospital, either using local anaesthesia with sedation or general anaesthesia. Sutures and incisions are placed as inconspicuously as possible in order to minimise visible scarring while still allowing Dr Teston to perform the necessary repair.

After Your Surgery

Your recovery will be based on the extent of your injury and the complexity of your surgery. Your hand may be in a splint for a period of time to prevent natural movement from affecting your results. Physical therapy is also likely to be necessary after surgery, in order to restore full motion and function to the hand. Once your hand is fully healed, it is likely the results of your hand surgery will provide permanent relief.

Hand injuries can be painful, crippling and even aesthetically problematic. Dr Teston will take all of these concerns into consideration when she provides the surgical repair necessary to restore form, function and appearance.
